Instead of focusing on the Atlas itself, Rene approached the chronically tight and restrictive muscles that held the atlas out of alignment. AtlasProfilax became more of a neuro-muscular massage treatment that liberated the first cervical vertebra from the tense and spastic sub-occipital muscles of the neck. An ingenious and highly effective massage tool was invented to soften and release the muscles long enough to allow a safe relocation to occur.
This massager creates a specific frequency of vibration that relaxes the muscles and guides the atlas back to balance. No direct contact is made on the atlas. Once freed from the tension and it's old holding pattern, the Atlas slides into place naturally with very little effort from the practitioner. No chiropractic techniques are used; no adjusting, no cracking, no torquing, and no hands.
In a sense, the treatment is an installation, as if the atlas was never truly secure from the beginning of one's life.
All practitioners bring their own talents to the treatment. Each session will be given a little differently depending on the therapist. My treatment is usually 45 minutes to one hour. I spend the first part aquainting myself with the client in order to understand their specific concerns. This is a time where I tune into the patient and feel what they are feeling inside. This is a valuable moment for me in terms of how to address the clients needs.
I then begin observing the body, looking at the leg length, feeling the position or the atlas, palpating the muscles. When ready, I lay hands on the neck and begin to unwind the tension using cranial sacral therapy along with energy work. I may hold acupressure points, do some polarity therapy, rock the belly to increase relaxation or just breath with them. Once I feel the client relaxed and ready, I begin the atlas work with them sitting on a stool with their head gently cradled in my chest. After this is complete, I lie the client back onto the table where I spend the next twenty minutes or so doing cranial sacral/polarity work. I find this extremely valuable for the client to lie still after the treatment. The cranial work fine tunes the atlas work by further relaxing the muscles and assisting in the union of the atlas, occiput and sacrum. It is very deep and peaceful work that honors the body and encourages deeper release.
